Sun City Ride of Truth

So yesterday we decided to cycle to Sun City. I was looking to do a steady long ride and was told it was around 140km so off i went ready for a long day in the saddle. There was suppose to be 18 of us but only 9 rocked up and only 4 rode up front. 5.30 am and we started off the day from JHB.

Robin Frankland wasn’t going to ride the whole way with us and had already ridden 1hr to get to start and so in the first 20min he was already frisky and pushing up the pace, the first 60km went by in just under 2hrs and over some big rolling hills and at stages we were all hanging on, lucky for us Robin turned to go home and we decided to keep the pace steady for the rest of the ride. But the one thing about boys is that they love to race and the pace got even faster.

By 140km into our ride, YES, you heard me…the ride was actually 167km we were averaging just over 33km/h and into a head wind for the last 80km of ride, we were all strong but hanging on. Then Brendon got a puncture which allowed us to take a breather, but also allowing the legs to cool down a bit too.

With his tyre fixed the pace went up again, i knew i didn’t have much left in me so i pulled for about 10km before having to sit up and just soft pedal home, lucky for me it was all uphill drags and head wind and 33degrees hot.

I managed to get home in 5hrs 18min for the ride and was a broken man when i rolled into the entrance for sun city, desperately looking for some water and something to eat. A ride like this blasts everything out of your system and hopefully i will have a good next 9 days of my 2 week big block.

Be a kid again…go on you know you want too

How often do we do grown up things, i am sure like many of you the novelity of doing these things wears off very quickly. I for one am somebody that never lets my inner child die. In fact i play with it everyday to make sure he stays healthy and strong.

Yesterday we went to Gold Reef City and we were kids again, we went on every rollercoaster, ate ice cream, screamed, shouted and even cried a little, felt sick and then went home, just like we used too.

The boys this week have also planned paint ball and off road Go-Karting..

So get out there, live it large and be a kid again. Its so much fun.

I had the pleasure of getting meet and spend a bit of time with David Zibriskie, at the time he was racing for TEAM CSC who were in Cape Town for a training camp. You notice something straight away about this guy, he is SPECIAL.

I found his new product when i was in the US last month and found a awesome You Tube clip for him for his product, its worth a watch.

www.dz-nuts.com is the website to see the products and below is the link for the You Tube advert.

Tech Heads at it again

Today i got to spend some time with my fellow Tech Head Tri Geek God, Quentin Foster. He was bolting the last few screws on to my new Cycling shoes. This is a generation 4 shoe and they are getting sweeter and neater everytime. We are 2 guys that believe in pushing the boundries and working the body as a whole system. We the guys that people might point at and laugh at but we don’t care as we do it with a smile on our face in the quest for speed.

To you my fellow Clowns, Tech Heads, Tri Geeks, I salute you and boldly step forward with you into the future. Hey everybody laughed at me when i ran in knee high socks and even more so when i was the only guy at IMSA 08 to bike in mine and look at world champs photo’s this year.

So maybe we are pioneers in this crazy addictive sport we love so much.

Only in Africa…

I woke up to Elephants in the garden across from mine this morning. Usually there are 26 cows staring at me but this morning i had 2 Elephants. The circus is in town and setting up 400m from my balcony.

The thing that makes it even more funny is that i am in a built up city…

Things that SUCKED about USA

There was a few things that i wish you didn’t have to do, see or go through when being in the USA and here are a few things that i thought sucked :

  • Travelling 30hrs to get there and gaining 7 hrs time too
  • JETLAG on both ends, nothing like being up on the Internet at 3am for a week
  • Security checks…We get it, 9/11 sucked but come on…you go from 1 check straight to another…
  • Fast Food, very hard to find healthy food and when you do its almost double the price
  • Exchange rate i was lucky enough to be there when it was over R10 to $1
  • TV, you watch your shows between adverts and mostly infomercials
  • Did i mention a security check every 30min just about everywhere you go ??
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road, we had a few close calls

Anyway i embraced the culture of the country i was visiting and we had a good time, but i was reminded that there is no place like home.

Cool website , check it out

Tanielle found a cool site to waste some time on and get some cool images of yourself and your friends for facebook profiles or greeting cards or just general fun.

Things that ROCK about the USA

I have had sometime to think about what ROCKS and what SUCKS about the USA and thought i would get it down for you. Firstly i am amazed at how advanced SA is, there was hardly anything there that we did not have here at home. Anyway here are the things that ROCK :

  • Mailboxes, every house has these cool mailboxes on the streets and there is no big fences or walls.

  • Sweets, if you like sweets, there is different kind, flavour out there
  • Post Office, works like a dream, i asked for a tracking number when i sent something and the guy laughed at me and said they don’t need them
  • Transport, you can go where, anytime and quick and most of the time cheap too
  • Cars, they have the biggest, most powerful cars you have ever seen. Plus you pay 0% on car finance, making every car cheap to own, Hummer retail for $ 22 000 ( R 235 000 ) off show room floor.

  • Diversity, you can be anything and do anything you want
  • Population, they are so big that you only need 5% of the population to buy into something and you are a multi millionaire.

Coolest Scooter ever

I saw this today at the vespa store, i’m not too sure what brand it is as there was nobody there to help me but i thought it was really funny. If batman rode a scooter it would look like this. It has 2 wheels in front to make it more stable i guess then only 1 wheel at the back.

There was nobody to help me to get more info, but will go back and find out soon as it might be a good way to save on petrol for going to gym, shops etc.
