Sun City Ride of Truth
So yesterday we decided to cycle to Sun City. I was looking to do a steady long ride and was told it was around 140km so off i went ready for a long day in the saddle. There was suppose to be 18 of us but only 9 rocked up and only 4 rode up front. 5.30 am and we started off the day from JHB.
Robin Frankland wasn’t going to ride the whole way with us and had already ridden 1hr to get to start and so in the first 20min he was already frisky and pushing up the pace, the first 60km went by in just under 2hrs and over some big rolling hills and at stages we were all hanging on, lucky for us Robin turned to go home and we decided to keep the pace steady for the rest of the ride. But the one thing about boys is that they love to race and the pace got even faster.
By 140km into our ride, YES, you heard me…the ride was actually 167km we were averaging just over 33km/h and into a head wind for the last 80km of ride, we were all strong but hanging on. Then Brendon got a puncture which allowed us to take a breather, but also allowing the legs to cool down a bit too.
With his tyre fixed the pace went up again, i knew i didn’t have much left in me so i pulled for about 10km before having to sit up and just soft pedal home, lucky for me it was all uphill drags and head wind and 33degrees hot.
I managed to get home in 5hrs 18min for the ride and was a broken man when i rolled into the entrance for sun city, desperately looking for some water and something to eat. A ride like this blasts everything out of your system and hopefully i will have a good next 9 days of my 2 week big block.
